ISO 4684:2005规定了适用于所有皮革类型的挥发性物质测定方法。用这种方法无法测定皮革的准确含水量。这是因为在高温下，其他挥发性物质会逸出，单宁和脂肪会被氧化。干燥后，皮革中可能会残留一些被吸收的水分。

ISO 4684:2005 specifies a method of determination of volatile matter which is applicable to all leather types.It is not possible to determine the exact moisture content of leather by this method. This is because at elevated temperatures other volatile substances escape and tannins and fats can be oxidized. Some absorbed water may be left in the leather after drying.
